As you are aware, rabbits have needs just like any other pet. You will of course want to provide him with a warm, cozy and dry shelter along with plenty of food and fresh water, and a clean environment. It is important that a rabbit be up off the ground. This will help prevents predator from getting at them, and in some cases even if the hutch is secure, rabbits can die just from fright. Having it elevated also lets you have access to the hutch without having to bend down making feeding, cleaning and moving the rabbits easier.

There are many different models and styles of rabbit hutches available. You also have options like buying one already made in a kit that you just put together using some basic tools and even complete plans and blueprints to make your own. Since you want a sturdy rabbit hutch, you should think about these choices. If you are not good at putting things together you might want to just buy a prefabricated one that is ready to move into. Know your limitations before starting any projects.

When you look for an outdoor rabbit hutch that is already made, be sure that is made from treated wood and the wire mesh is coated with non toxic material so it will stand up to the weather and bugs. You want the bottom of the hutch where the animal will walk around to have mesh with spaces large enough for droppings to fall through but smaller than a baby rabbit can fall through.

Your outdoor rabbit hutch will need to have an easy to remove tray for the droppings so they can be put in your compost pile and used for fertilizer later.

Side Note On Rabbit Droppings: My son decided to raise eathrworms as well as rabbits to sell to local fisherman and to the pet store up the raod. His tub of eathworms are actually below the rabbit hutch so the droppings fall into the soil. This seems to please the earthworms a great deal!

Okay, back to our outdorr rabbit hutch. The cage should have a secure door in the front as well as one for where the rabbit will go to escape bad weather, his little safety zone inside the main hutch. You are going to need to inspect and clean the hutch on a regular basis so these access points need to be large enough and conveniently located for this purpose..

it is also a good idea to keep in mind that your rabbit, if purchased at a young age, will double or triple in size so the acces to the sleeping area needs to be large enough for a full size rabbit. You will want your outdoor rabbit hutch to be warm and dry but it needs to have some type of vent for the summer to allow hot air to be removed... of course this vent will need to be closed in the winter so make sure it can do so.

You can save money by purchasing a unit with three mesh sides and a smaller secure space but make sure this is large enough for your rabbits. You will also want to purchase one with a covered top to protect against rain.

I found a really great outdoor rabbit hutch on Amazon.com it has everything you could possibly need and the rabbit just loves his new home. One really cool thing is you can add a rabbit run to the hutch to allow him to hop about more freely, which we plan on doing this summer.
